The city’s economy and sports scene have developed hand in hand. Thanks to Bayer AG, Leverkusen has developed into an exceptional sporting location. Sport in and from Leverkusen is a first-class brand name, both nationally and internationally, and has been for many decades. An above-average number of professional teams are at the top of their game in their disciplines. In individual sports, athletes consistently surpass themselves. In addition to the many athletes of the 1st and 2nd divisions with the world-famous and awe-inspiring Bayer Cross on their chests, professional sport is also played by TUS 82 Opladen (3rd division handball) and the women of BBZ Opladen (2nd division basketball).
In contrast, the many sports clubs in Leverkusen and their part-time and voluntary helpers, trainers, groundsmen and supervisors are the pillars and foundation of amateur sports.
Three strong, professional partners in particular successfully manage the sports facilities in Leverkusen and also shape and support recreational and grassroots sports in Leverkusen.
